Abstract:
Europa aims to develop innovative approaches for the safety assessment of cultural heritage against natural hazards and disasters induced by climate change, and to propose advanced criteria and procedures for the mitigation of the relevant risks within a holistic approach. To this end these main issues will be developed: analysis of main categories of risk, including seismic, hydrogeological and effects of climate change, analysis of many categories of cultural heritage, including the punctual cultural heritage, sites and, in general, the widespread cultural heritage, and then working on two different scales: that of detail and urban.
Project objectives:
    Improvement of existing predictive models of risks, caused by natural hazards, for artefacts, structures and sites, assessing the hazards, their frequency, severity, duration and the vulnerability to these hazards;
    Identification of some indicators for assessing the main natural hazards, by taking into account the distinctive features of cultural heritage assets;
    Cataloguing and assessment of cultural heritage, also in terms of its significance.
·         Monitoring of cultural heritage assets to obtain reliable information on structural changes and damage;
·         Definition of risk mitigation strategies and advanced protection systems for historical buildings, through the design of adequate components and the development of specific devices for damage reduction;
    Development of innovative structural retrofitting methodologies by using advanced materials and technologies as a suitable alternative to traditional solutions;
    Definition of a methodology that selects the priorities in terms of response time, intervention costs and significance of the cultural asset;
    Provide a clear risk representation to decision makers at local, regional, national and international level responsible for disaster mitigation and safeguarding of cultural heritage assets;
·         Provide effective techniques of vulnerability assessment of cultural heritage, to optimize their conservation through risk prevention and mitigation actions;
·         Integration of outputs, models and data, in order to publish them online and development of a client service platform;
·         Promotion and dissemination of an increasing social consciousness of the relevance of the cultural heritage.
